What Janka hardness actually means

The Janka hardness test measures the force needed to press a small steel ball halfway into a piece of wood. The result — the Janka rating — tells you how well a species resists denting and surface wear. The higher the number, the harder and more dent-resistant the timber.

It is the standard way to compare flooring species, and it is genuinely useful: a floor in a busy hallway with kids, pets and chairs will show dents faster in a soft timber than a hard one. But hardness is only one part of the picture.

How to choose a species

A good choice balances six things rather than optimising any single one:

  1. Hardness for the traffic. Busy households, pets and entryways favour harder species (oak and up). Quiet rooms can carry a softer, more characterful timber like walnut.
  2. Colour & grain. Decide the look first — pale and minimal (maple, ash, white oak), warm and traditional (red oak), dark and refined (walnut), or rustic and busy (hickory). Grain also hides wear.
  3. Dimensional stability. Some species move more with humidity. Quarter-sawn boards and naturally stable species (oak, teak) gap and cup less in changeable climates.
  4. Can it be stained? If you want a specific colour, choose an open-grained species that takes stain evenly (oak, ash) rather than a blotch-prone one (maple).
  5. Budget. Widely grown species (oak) cost less than slow-growing or imported ones (walnut, tropicals). Width and grade affect price as much as species.
  6. Sustainability. Look for credible certification (such as FSC or PEFC) and favour locally grown timber where you can — it cuts transport impact and usually means better availability of matching boards.

Red oak vs white oak

This is the single most-asked species question, because oak dominates hardwood flooring and the two types look similar at a glance but behave differently.

Colour & grain

Red oak is warmer, with pink-to-russet undertones and a strong, open, wavy grain that reads as busy and traditional. White oak is cooler, with grey-brown to olive undertones and a tighter, straighter grain. White oak's calmer face is why it dominates current modern, Scandinavian and wire-brushed looks; red oak's busier grain suits classic interiors and hides wear well.

Water resistance

White oak's pores are plugged with a substance called tyloses, making it closed-grained and more water-resistant — historically the reason it was used for barrels and boats. Red oak is open-pored and absorbs moisture more readily. For kitchens and damp-prone rooms, white oak has the edge, though finish quality matters more than species either way.

Graining & staining

Both stain well, but they shift differently: red oak's pink base can fight cool grey stains and tends to read warmer, while white oak's neutral base takes greys, whites and natural tones more truly — another reason it suits contemporary palettes. Hard maple (~1450 Janka)

Very pale, almost creamy, with a fine smooth grain and few markings — a clean, contemporary look. It is hard and durable, but its density and tight grain make it prone to blotching when stained; it is usually left natural or finished with a tinted coat rather than a penetrating stain. Best where you want light and minimal.

American walnut (~1010 Janka)

The premium dark hardwood — rich chocolate-brown with a smooth, elegant grain. It is genuinely softer than oak, so it dents more easily and suits lower-traffic, formal spaces. Its natural depth of colour means it rarely needs staining. Often the most expensive mainstream species.

Ash (~1320 Janka)

Pale and blond like maple but with an open, oak-like grain, so it takes stain far more evenly than maple. Hard, springy and a good-value alternative to oak when you want a light floor that can still be coloured. Availability varies by region.

Hickory (~1820 Janka)

The hardest common temperate species — excellent for high-traffic homes and active families. It has a dramatic, rustic grain with strong colour variation between pale sapwood and darker heartwood, which hides wear superbly but is a bold visual choice.
